Working with Your Paediatrician to Care for Your Child Better

As parents, we know the early years are crucial to a child’s growth and development. In this series, our paediatricians Dr Mas Suhaila and Dr Heng Siok Kheng answer some common concerns most parents may have before visiting their child’s doctor. For parents who prefer reading, here’s a transcript of the video.

When do parents visit a paediatrician?

Parents often bring their children to a paediatrician for common childhood illnesses such as cough and cold, vomiting, diarrhoea, chickenpox and Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD). Parents also tend to bring their children to the paediatrician for topics surrounding growth and development, vaccinations that their child would need, common injuries and other related problems. They find it equally important to discuss serious issues like obesity, behaviour disorders, depression and adolescent risk behaviours with their paediatrician.

In what situations does my child have to be admitted to a hospital?

From time to time, if the child is quite ill with unexplained febrile episodes which are seizures associated with high body temperature but without any serious underlying health issues, or wheezing with breathlessness, they may need to be admitted for further investigations and treatment. Dr Mas further adds that “As paediatricians, we are privileged because parents regard us as a trusted source of health and information. In addition, they rely on us to provide advice on raising their children. Ultimately, we all have the common goal of bringing up our children to be healthy and happy individuals.”
